GENERAL MEETING OF THE MUSES

Fear not fellow writers. If you, like me, are having problems stringing together a sentence I have heard on the grape vine aka the muse vine that there is a general meeting of the muses. They are all there on a tropical island, sipping cocktails, enjoying the sun and laughing at our demise. Fear not, they will return (ETA unknown at this stage) but they need us as much as we need them. (Important that we believe this.)

Meanwhile there is a way to entice the little bugger back; go for a walk and indulge your senses, read a book or a batch of short stories, dig out those old stories and give them a revamp. Read inspiring blogs! Write a blog post - even if it is to express your desperation (like me). Inspiration could be just around the corner, sometimes you just have to go look for it!

The muse shall return... hopefully sooner rather than later :-)

Please come home muse....

  1. You are so right - inspiration comes at the most unexpected moment and in various forms, but the one sure way of enticing the muse into coming back is to DO something.

  3. My muse is back, Diane. Just finished two short stories, though the last one still needs a tidy-up. They will be published on my blog when the current Tuesday showing is finished, after which, Muse willing, I'll start all over again.

  4. Interestingly, I find if I go out for a brisk walk my muse returns from wherever it went. I think my brain needs more oxygen sometimes.

Blogging helps, or instant writing. You know, choose a word, and write, just write anything for ten minutes. Amazing results, and often a story idea.

It'll come back to you. If not we should get together and do a word sprint. I wrote about them recently on my blog. Its where you agree a time with other writers, say thirty minutes, then go for it! Afterwards, there is a quick interaction via twitter/email/blog on word count or content. Its a fun way to get in the 'flow' and stay productive too.

Otherwise, you could take the day off and eat cake instead... ;-)

  5. I too had a hard museless time over Christmas, but now I'm back to my writing group I had to complete a story for homework, which I did. The remarks from the group were positive and they thought it could easily be turned into a story for TAB. So I'm going to work on that. Yours will return too, I'm sure.

  6. Hey! If my muses are hanging out on an island and sipping cocktails, I want to be there too! Sounds warmer. :)

Maybe that's why the writing has been tough as of late. I don't give my muse much vacation time.

  7. My muse is still here - quite annoyed though as I glued her big toe to my keyboard to stop her flying aay.

  8. I like that idea, Diane! But you're right about getting out the old stories - I'm trying to revamp some of mine in between new writing.

  9. Just grab that muse by the neck and pin it against the wall, Diane. Then when you're done giving it a stern talking to, tell it had better explain why it's been goofing off, or you'll kick its teeth out. I betcha it comes up with something.

  10. Valerie - Well done!
Teresa - My muse returned late yesterday and made up for it big time. Helped me finish a 2100 word story. So figure the break did him good. Just as well!
Maria - good advice, add the cake to that, excellent advice!
Maggie May - Sounds like you are on to something there. Go for it!
David - hello and welcome to my blog. Yes, I am thinking next time my muse should take me with him!
Patsy - smart thinking girl! I should try that.
Rosemary - I do love my supply of old stories that have accumulated over the years. Having back up, takes the pressure off.
A man called Valance - Howdy! If all else fails I will resort to your advice. :-)

  11. Haha, I can just imagine a poster on a lamp-post or something: "Lost: Muse. Usually is very quiet and shy, but sometimes babbles like crazy." Funny post :) I hope that inspiration is just around the corner for you!

  13. I find reading books on writing entices my muse to visit. As I read about plotting, characterisation etc it makes me think about my own writing and I generally find myself itching to get stuff down on paper.
