MOMENTUM

Momentum is magic when you've got it going. When I'm in the writing zone I feel complete. BUT after a visit from my parents (I see them once a year) I found it difficult this morning to get back into the swing of things. My momentum had come to a stand still and although I have many writing projects to tackle I just couldn't get into it. I paced around the house for the first half of the day searching for my muse. He had found a good hiding place! After convincing myself that I wasn't going to be happy until I achieved something today, and needed to be disciplined to get on with it, I eventually found my muse. My momentum returned and I completed that book proposal I've been wanting to do for my non-fiction manuscript. I also managed to do some further drafting on a short story I'm working on. I'm happy now!

Today I learned when momentum stops I need to push myself to get going again. It is worth the effort - the sense of achievement at the end of my day has made me a much happier writer.

Keep writing....

  1. I find it very difficult to get the momentum going these days once it's been broken! Well done on finding that muse!

  2. I find getting momentum going the most difficult thing, every day.
Once I've got those first few words down, I'm fine but I can spend ages searching for them.
Good luck with your book proposal.

  3. I am really struggling at the moment and even doing homework for my writing group is difficult and I normally sail through it. Only seeing your parents once a year must be quite difficult and probably knocked you off balance. Well done for getting going again.

  4. Teresa - I do find it a bit scary (okay a lot scary) when I do lose my momentum, which probably doesn't help my problem. I was so determined to find my muse yesterday and to get writing!

  5. Hi Gail - I try to always have some kind of writing project to work on. I sleep better when I know the next day there is something for me to work on. Goodness, imagine the panic I would go into without a project AND no momentum, lol. Thanks for the good wishes.

  6. Maggie May, you wouldn't believe the amount of times I tell myself, 'I can do this!' Honestly I must be some kind of writing nut, if I don't write I feel empty. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said the visit probably knocked me off balance. I did go through a lot of emotions and it was like my past collided with my present. A wise woman you are Maggie May! Thank you. I might try not to be so hard on myself now. x

  7. It can be very difficult to concentrate on writing if we feel unsettled (even if it's in a good way) so you're right not to be too hard on yourself for taking a while to get back into it.

  8. It's so easy to get out of that zone, isn't it? Sometimes, I find it helps me to do something mundane like ironing, as I can think while going through the boring task and usually long to get back to writing afterwards!

Good luck with your non-fiction proposal and short story.

  9. Thanks Rosemary. I do panic when my momentum stops. That is good advice you gave. Next time I do find myself in this situation I will do something mundane instead of going into panic mode and see if that brings me back to the writing. x

  12. My muse seems to know that the momentum has to start the moment I sit in the shed with a fresh cup of tea.

  16. Wise words. I have a sign in my office that says "Just Write". It reminds me that I just have to get on with it, muse or no muse. :)
